FERIT, in cooperation with IBM and CROZ, is launching the Mainframe Academy which, through a multidisciplinary and comprehensive approach, aims to prepare students for a career in one of the most renowned and globally prevalent technologies – IBM Mainframe.

Mainframe technology represents powerful computer systems designed to process vast amounts of data and transactions. These systems often support thousands of users simultaneously, with the ability to process more than 100,000 transactions per second. Mainframe servers are used in critical sectors like finance, healthcare, and government agencies, where reliability and security are vital. Additionally, modern mainframe servers can also support cutting-edge technologies like artificial intelligence and analytics, making them a crucial part of digital transformation.

We invite all students to join us for Mainframe Day, where a series of exciting activities will be available to explore the world of mainframe technology and mark the beginning of the Mainframe Academy.

Mainframe Day will take place on November 15 at 9 a.m. at FERIT, Kneza Trpimira 2B in Osijek and it will enable students to participate in the second Code-A-Thon held by IBM experts from the Netherlands, and meet experts from companies that use the mainframe. It will also be possible to hear first-hand experiences of FERIT alumni who have chosen a career in the mainframe.

The II. Code-A-Thon will take place from 9:00 to 11:00 AM, and this year’s theme is COBOL & Db2. Participants of the first workshop can also apply! The workshop will take place in the computer lab T1-21. Db2 for z/OS is a powerful database management system capable of inserting more than 11 million records per second. Combined with its exceptional reliability, it can be called the King of Databases. During this 2-hour session, you’ll learn how the COBOL program connects this epic database on a real mainframe.

Meet the mainframers

Meet the mainframers is our chance to meet mainframe experts from various Croatian companies and institutions. Students and participants will be able to connect directly with industry leaders and potential future employers. They will get the opportunity to learn more about the development and application of mainframe technologies and gain insights into career opportunities in this field. The event will take place in front of the FERIT Council Hall and will also begin at 9 a.m. At 11:30 a.m., the official opening of the FERIT Mainframe Academy will follow in the FERIT Council Hall, where we will introduce the academy’s goals and plans.

The program ends with a round table at 12:00 p.m., where FERIT students who are currently building a career in the mainframe industry will answer questions from fellow students.
